Do you have unclaimed property out there waiting for you? As a courtesy to my clients, I recently searched the databases I know to see if there’s something I can alert them of. In a few instances, I was able to let clients know that they may have assets to be claimed. You can check this yourself. Here’s how:

If you live outside California or have at any point in the past, start with the Missing Money search tool from the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA):
Spread the Word About Checking for Unclaimed Property
Feel free to spread the word about checking for unclaimed property to family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors. And don’t forget to tell them who gave you the idea! Who knows what’s out there? There have been cases where folks have recovered thousands of dollars. According to the NAUPA, more than $3 billion worth of assets were recovered by claimants over the last year!
I view my role as a wealth manager goes beyond just building a financial plan and managing portfolios. I try to think of new opportunities in any arena that remotely touches my clients’ financial lives. Conducting a preliminary search for unclaimed property and sharing tips like this is just one example.
